Custom Made Orthoses

What are Custom Made Orthoses?

Custom Made Orthoses are foot orthoses which are bespoke made to the shape of your feet. They are used in the treatment of many foot complaints, for the management of pain and to aid recovery from injury. They are worn inside your shoes to influence foot position and reduce forces on the neuromusculoskeletal system.

How are Custom Made Orthoses Made?

Hackney Podiatry provides custom made orthoses following musculoskeletal assessment and discussion. During an MSK assessment a history of your preventing complaint is taken and your objectives are taken into consideration to ensure treatment with orthoses is appropriate for you. Once an assessment has been completed casts of your feet are taken using plaster of paris and are then sent to an external lab for manufacture.

Can Custom Made Orthoses help me?

Custom Made Orthoses can be used to help treat the following:

  • ankle pain
  • plantar heel pain
  • arch pain
  • foot and ankle osteoarthritis
  • shin splints
  • achilles tendinitis
  • posterior tibialis tendinitis or dysfunction
  • extensor tendinitis
  • foot strain
  • forefoot overload
  • hallux limitus and rigidus
  • off loading painful lesions such as corns/scar tissue/verrucae

A range of styles can be manufactured with a greater choice of materials compared to an off the shelf orthotic which can be limited in its effectiveness. At the MSK assessment, the pros and cons of using a custom made orthotic versus an off the shelf type will be discussed.
